Another key factor in getting the most effective results from spray painting is the use of the correct spray tip size. Many people use a too large tip, which results in overspray and wasted material. The manual for your paint sprayer and the back of the paint can both provide guidance on the recommended tip orifice size. However, it’s worth experimenting with a smaller tip than suggested.
By understanding spray tip sizing, you can choose a tip appropriate for the width of the spray fan. You can also choose the orifice size needed to pass paint through without clogging.
Using a worn tip can cause overspray and waste of paint, so it’s important to change it. I replaced good-quality tips after 50 to 500 liters, depending on the product (paint) used. An experienced sprayer can tell by the sound and spray pattern if the tip is blown and needs to be changed.
Don’t let a worn tip ruin your spray painting project; replace it to ensure smooth and efficient paint application.
In my experience, I found that using a Graco sprayer with FF LP 210 and 212 tips was very effective in achieving a superior finish for doors. Not only did it result in a high-quality finish, but it also reduced overspray by up to 50%.
