Why I like Wagner Spraytech 0518080 Control Spray Max HVLP

My Wagner spray gun has been in use for over three years now. Even though I have a more expensive HVLP sprayer such as Wagner Control Pro 130, Control Pro 150 and 170 Power Tank Paint Sprayers. I find this turbine sprayer much more versatile and easier to operate. It sprays oil-based and water-based paints and primers quickly, has an adjustable material flow setting, and is easy to clean. However, to achieve a professional finish, it is necessary to take time, read and re-read the manual and practice using the gun.

It is important not to expect flawless results immediately after unboxing the product, filling it and spraying it.

Unboxing Wagner Spraytech Control Spray Max

To gain proficiency, I suggest using cheap paint, appropriate diluents, additives, and disposable paint filters while practicing on lots of cardboard. Paint additives like Penetrol for oil-based paints and Floetrol for water-based paints can make a big difference between a professional-looking paint job and a bad one.

The first time I used the Wagner 0518080 spray gun to paint the door and trim. Although it was not the biggest project to choose, I achieved such an excellent result that I was still impressed after a year as you can see in the image below.

paint door and trim with Wagner 0518080 spray gun

To achieve a smooth finish, I lightly sanded all the surfaces, used a liquid deglosser, and a primer.

I then conducted viscosity tests using paint thinner to achieve the right consistency and I practiced on cardboard before spraying. I removed hardware such as handles, locks, and hinges, or you can cover them with painter’s tape to protect them from paint.

Also I protected the floor or any nearby furniture from paint splatters.

It took a bit of trial and error to figure out how to adjust the settings to get the spray pattern I wanted. However, once I got the hang of it, I was really impressed with the results.

Despite being made of inexpensive plastic, I feel like this spray model did an excellent job, especially considering its affordable price point.

Overall, it takes practice, patience, and careful preparation to use a Wagner spray gun effectively, but the results are worth it. You can also check other Airless and HVLP Wagner reviews here in detail.

Wagner Spraytech Control Spray Max Review- A new experience in 2023

Furniture refinishing with Wagner control max HVLP sprayer

Last month, I decided to turn my extra room into a spray booth to work on my furniture refinishing projects. As a painter, I can confidently say that this sprayer is an excellent choice for small projects. I found the setup to be simple to follow. I used cheap latex paint, and it took me around 15 minutes to strain and thin it before spraying.

Seriously, I was impressed with how even the finish looked on my bedroom furniture. I spent only 2-4 minutes dialing in the settings, and the sprayer did the rest of the work. Once everything was in place, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the finish on my furniture – it exceeded my expectations!

What I love most about this sprayer is that it’s simple to use, even for non-professionals. Overall, I would highly recommend this sprayer to anyone looking to do DIY furniture refinishing projects.

HVLP Technology

When you buy this Wagner spraytech model, you’re not only getting a product that costs around $130 (at the time of publishing), but you’re also getting many features. One of the key features is HVLP technology that the sprayer uses. HVLP stands for “high volume, low pressure,” which means that the sprayer atomizes materials into fine particles, ensuring a smooth and professional finish with little overspray.

Powerful Two-Stage Turbine

The Control Spray Max works with a wide variety of materials, including latex paints, stains, and polyurethane. Its powerful two-stage turbine can handle even thicker paint easily, making it suitable for both small and large painting projects. Customers appreciate the versatility of this sprayer, noting that it can be used for everything from furniture refinishing to painting walls and ceilings.

Adjustable settings:

The Control Spray Max allows precise control over paint or stain flow with its pressure control dial and material flow adjuster. Additionally, the air cap can be adjusted to spray in different 3 patterns, including round, vertical, or horizontal. I found these adjustable settings useful for great finishes every time.

Furthermore, I have also tested another model of control series such as the Wagner Control Painter, which has 1.5 quarts of cup capacity and has two types of spray patterns. (vertical, or horizontal).

Note: If you’re on a tight budget but still looking for a Wagner control sprayer that can deliver smooth results with excellent control and precision, then I highly recommend reading my review of the Wagner Spraytech Control Painter. This sprayer is a great alternative to the Control Spray Max and can handle small to medium-sized painting projects with ease.

Rating: 4.3 out of 5 stars

Stationary Base and Hose:

The sprayer’s stationary base is connected to the spray gun by a 20-foot hose, which makes it easy to reach painting projects and reduces hand fatigue. A 1.5 quart plastic cup and a metal 1 quart cup come with the sprayer, which allows flexibility when spraying material.

If you plan to paint larger projects with a sprayer, you can use the stationary base and hose as an easy way to complete larger painting projects.

Rating: 4.2 out of 5 stars

Spray patterns

The range of spray patterns from 1/2″ to 12″ wide can be useful in a variety of painting projects. For example, when painting trim, you can adjust the settings to create a narrow spray pattern for precise coverage along the edges and corners.

For larger surfaces, such as walls or ceilings, you can adjust the spray pattern to be wider for more efficient coverage. Having control over the spray pattern also helps achieve a fine finish on surfaces like furniture or cabinets, which require more detailed work.

Wagner 0518080 Cleaning System

Cleaning the Wagner Spraytech 0518080 Lock N Go system is an important part of its maintenance, and fortunately, it is relatively easy to clean. If you have used latex or water-based stain or paint, cleaning with soapy water is enough. However, if you have used oil-based materials, cleaning with mineral spirits is necessary.

It is important to note that using oil-based paints with this sprayer is not recommended due to the extended cleaning time and the need to disassemble the equipment to ensure all paint is removed. By properly cleaning the Wagner Spraytech 0518080, you can ensure that it continues to work effectively for your future projects.

Wagner Spraytech Control Spray Max Warranty

You will get one-year warranty for control sprayers just like Flexio and Studio Sprayers. This warranty is essential as it covers any defects in the sprayer’s materials, giving customers peace of mind when using the product.

How I use Wagner control Max??

First, I recommend setting up a workspace with proper ventilation and protection for any surrounding areas or objects that you don’t want paint or stain on. Once you have your workspace set up, you can fill the sprayer’s paint cup with the paint or stain of your choice.

Next, I adjust the sprayer’s settings to achieve the desired spray pattern and flow rate for the specific project I’m working on.

By adjusting the settings on the 0518080 sprayer, I customized the spray patterns to be anywhere from 1/2″ to 12″ wide. This gave me optimal control and precision for a fine finish on my painting project.

Then, I held the sprayer a few inches away from the surface I painted. I recommend using a back-and-forth motion while spraying and overlapping each pass slightly to achieve an even coat. This technique ensures paint or stain application evenly and prevents streaking or uneven areas.

I like to work in small sections, moving the sprayer steadily and consistently to avoid drips or uneven finishes.

After finishing the painting, I clean the sprayer thoroughly with water or the recommended cleaning solution. This is to prevent clogging or damage to the equipment. Overall, using the Wagner 0518080 sprayer has helped me achieve professional-looking finishes on a variety of projects, from furniture to cabinetry and more.

My Concern about Wagner spraytech 0518080 Sprayer

The Wagner Control Spray Max is a highly-rated HVLP sprayer, but there is one common concern that I noticed that this sprayer can clog easily if the paint is not thin enough or too thick. This can cause the sprayer to stop working or create uneven finishes. However, with proper thinning and attention to the paint viscosity, this issue can be avoided.

Overall, I have had a positive experience with the Wagner Control Spray Max and have not had any major issues with it. However, it’s essential to follow the instructions carefully and pay attention to the paint’s consistency to achieve the finest results. In my opinion, this sprayer is a worthwhile investment for anyone looking to paint themselves.
